Centrifugal pumps are used extensively in the oil and gas and petrochemical industries. From LACT charge pumps on production platforms to booster pumps used in oil pipelines, centrifugal pumps are the workhorse of the industry.

This online course will cover the basics of centrifugal pumps, with particular emphasis given to petroleum applications. Pump types will be discussed, as well as liquid properties related to petroleum pumping applications. We will cover pump curves, system curves, NPSH, specific speed, suction specific speed and the pump affinity laws. The effects on pump performance of high viscosity fluids, common in petroleum applications, will be covered. Finally, we will discuss in some depth series and parallel pumping configurations.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Different types of pumps commercially available
  • Properties of petroleum liquids
  • Characteristics of a centrifugal pump
  • H-Q, E-Q and BHP versus Q curves
  • Specific speed and suction specific speed
  • The effects of changes in pump speed and impeller diameter
  • Using the pump affinity laws
  • Pump drives and calculation of brake horsepower
  • The effect of high viscosity on pump curves
  • Calculating flow and head for parallel and series pumping applications
