Overview
This 3-hour course discusses the use of compressed air to "store" large volumes of electrical energy. The course covers the currently operating plants, storage options, the various types of plants, and the future concepts for compressed air plants.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- The history of compressed air energy plants
- The storage requirements of CAES
- The basis of underground storage for CAES
- The advantages of each type of underground storage medium
- How a conventional CAES plant works
- Why a recuperator is used in CAES
- The advantages of steam-injection in CAES
- Why heat must be added back to compressed air
- The benefits of CAES to the utility industry
