This 3-hour course is about combustion turbine power plants. A combustion turbine power plant is a simple plant that typically consists of a gas turbine supplied by natural gas. These plants are not particularly efficient, but they are relatively inexpensive to build and can be installed in a short amount of time. They are ideal for short-term needs and for supplying peak needs. When used in a combined cycle plant though, the overall efficiency is very good. With large quantities of natural gas available in the US, combined cycle power plants are expected to be a major component in utility generation fleets for many years. This course covers the design and operational characteristics of combustion turbines as well as taking an in-depth look at the natural gas industry.
