This course includes a data and fact-based overview of fracking practices, and its impact on the U.S. energy industry. The discussion uses several historical graphs to drive home the pertinent energy points relating to fracking. It is led by an expert with over 40 years technical, strategic, and financial experience in the energy sector, with 20 years with ExxonMobil.

Different energy generation technologies and their relative change over the last 20 years with regards to market share, emissions, and impact on electricity prices are discussed with relation to the fracking revolution since 2008.

The course is designed to provide more in-depth knowledge of fracking and how it has forever impacted U.S. natural gas supply and electricity prices.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how the oil and gas industry drills a fracked well, including safety and environmental precautions, well depths, and production methods.
  • Describe the impact of fracking on U.S. natural gas production, LNG exports, and gas and electricity prices.
  • Compare changes in the U.S. electricity-generation market shares of renewables, coal, natural gas, nuclear, and oil and the emissions associated with each source.
  • Identify the major CO2-emitting countries and describe their future emissions trajectories.
  • Explain the California duck curve and its relationship to access to U.S. natural gas.
