This course is intended for a wide range audience and in particular, the non-geotechnical engineer. However, it is not intended as an exhaustive review of the subject. The course focuses on more common subjects in rudimentary fashion. In this course, you will learn the background for bearing capacity and settlement analysis, lateral earth pressure and retaining walls, as well as piles, drilled shafts and common soil properties.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify common soil properties and subsurface exploration methods.
- Apply methods for calculating settlement.
- Calculate and assign the allowable soil bearing capacity using applicable methods.
- Distinguish among the types of earth pressure and explain how each is calculated.
- Determine the total force resulting from lateral pressure and apply appropriate factors of safety.
- Describe the use of piles and drilled shafts in foundation design.
- Explain the principles of soil compaction.
