Electrical bushings are essential components for a wide range of electrical equipment such as power transformers, shunt reactors, circuit breakers, and capacitors. Despite presenting an outward impression of simplicity, bushings have evolved into complex components which perform the critical function of carrying current at high voltage through equipment enclosures and barriers.

There are two main types of bushings: solid/bulk and capacitance-graded/condenser. Solid bushings, often made of porcelain, are simpler and economical for lower voltages but face limitations at higher voltages due to non-uniform stress distribution.

Capacitance-graded bushings, including resin bonded paper (RBP), oil impregnated paper (OIP), resin impregnated paper (RIP), and resin impregnated synthetic (RIS), are preferred for higher voltages. OIP bushings are widely used, impregnated with oil for increased dielectric strength, while RIP and RIS offer advancements like dry insulation and reduced risk of oil leaks.

This course covers the basics of electrical bushings, their major types, construction, design requirements and condition assessment tests.

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The basic function of an electrical bushing and their historical development.
  • Various applications of bushings in electrical equipment such as power transformers, shunt reactors, circuit breakers, and capacitors.
  • Design requirements for different types of bushings, including solid/bulk type bushings, porcelain, composite resin silicon and cast resin.
  • Basic concepts and construction of condenser bushings (capacitance graded bushings) and different condenser bushing technologies (RBP, OIP, RIP and RIS).
  • Different types of bushings and their components.
  • Contemporary bushing standards and design requirements.
  • Different kinds of bushing connections (fixed, draw lead and draw rod).
  • What voltage and test taps on condenser bushings are.
  • The various bushing condition and diagnostic tests (capacitance, tanδ, and partial discharges, etc.).
