Underpinning is a process implemented to strengthen or increase the depth of a structure's foundation, typically in response to changes in the physical characteristics of the soil supporting it, or alterations to the building itself.

The need for underpinning often arises in situations where the foundation of a building has started to show signs of stress, due to factors such as soil instability, construction of nearby structures, seismic activity, or inadequate initial foundation design. Other times, it may be necessary when the usage of a building changes, such as adding additional floors to an existing structure, thereby increasing the load on the foundation.

Underpinning involves a variety of techniques, each chosen based on factors such as the nature of the ground, the depth of the excavation, the loads to be carried, and the local experience and availability of materials and equipment.
