Transmission Line Design (Volume V) - Pole Structures (Ohio T&M)
Credit: 5 PDH
Subject Matter Expert: Lee Layton, P.E.
In Transmission Line Design (Volume V) - Pole Structures, you'll learn ...
- How to design single pole structures
- How to design H-frame structures
- Factors that limit structure spans
- Stress limitation values for various grades of wood used for poles
Overview
To meet the Ohio Board's intent that online courses be "paced" by the provider, a timer will be used to record your study time. You will be unable to access the quiz until the required study time of 250 minutes has been met.

Length: 74 pages
This 5-hour course is the final in a series of courses on the design of medium voltage electrical transmission lines. This volume is divided into two chapters: the first chapter addresses the design of single pole structures, and the second chapter explains how to design H-frame structures.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- How to calculate structural loading of single pole structures
- The factors that limit span lengths
- How to determine the maximum level ground span
- How to calculate the maximum horizontal spans for a wood structure
- How to use the “ground line method” for structural analysis
- The factors involved in vertical spans calculations
- The loading factors for H-frame structures
- The impact of crossbraces on H-frame structures
- The benefits of various V-brace configurations
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 30 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
