Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above). However, if you are not licensed in Ohio, it is suggested that you purchase the self-paced version of the course.

In Design of Crane Runways, you'll learn ...

  • The two types of crane runways
  • Crane loads and other loads acting on crane runways
  • The design, serviceability, and fatigue considerations for runways
  • The standards used in the design of crane runways

Crane runways are essential elements in crane supporting structures, as they are the major structural element that transfers crane loads from crane wheels to the main structural system before those loads are transferred to the ground.

This course involves a deep study on the design of crane runways, according to the latest US standards: AISC Construction Manual 15th edition, AISE Technical Report No.13, Design Guide No.7 (Industrial Building Design-Third Edition), CMMA-Technical Report.No.74, 2015, ASCE7-16, and IBC2018. All course equations are presented using ASD and LRFD methods.

Crane runways may be classified into two types: overhead crane runways and underhung crane runways. Each type has specific structural system and design considerations. They may be hot rolled beams, built-up beams, beams with cap plates or cap channels, or trusses. We will address crane loads and other loads acting on crane runways, as well as the design, serviceability, and fatigue considerations for runways. We will also cover other runway components, such as bearing stiffeners, intermediate stiffeners, stoppers, horizontal trusses, and crane brackets.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Types of runways beams (overhead cranes and underhung cranes)
  • Crane loads (vertical loads with impact, side thrusts, and longitudinal loads)
  • Other loads acting on runways, such as seismic and wind loads
  • Load combinations of crane loads and other loads
  • Design of crane runway and its components (bearing stiffeners, intermediate stiffeners, rails, rail components, kickers, stoppers, etc.)
  • Serviceability considerations of crane runway beams
  • Fatigue design
  • Considerations of outdoor cranes

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
