Overview
This course is specifically designed for Ohio-licensed engineers to qualify as a "timed and monitored" online course. The course contains an automatic timer that prevents the user from accessing the quiz and earning a certificate of completion until the minimum amount of study time has been met. This achieves the Ohio Board's intent that an online course should be "paced" by the provider. For more information, please see the Ohio state requirements. This course may also be accepted in other states (see the "Board Acceptance" tab above). However, if you are not licensed in Ohio, it is suggested that you purchase the self-paced version of the course.

In Glued Laminated Timber Columns and Beam-Columns, you'll learn ...

  • The effect of column slenderness on its capacity and failure mode
  • The maximum permitted slenderness ratio for timber columns
  • Calculate the critical buckling design value for a glulam column
  • Calculate the column stability factor for a glulam column

Structural glued laminated timber (glulam) is a material that combines the warmth and beauty of wood with modern engineering to create structures for the most demanding applications. From short-span headers and beams in residential construction, to graceful exposed arches and curved beams in churches, to long span beams and trusses for commercial spaces, glulam has the answer.

This three-hour course builds on the knowledge obtained from previous courses Glued Laminated Timber Fundamentals and Glued Laminated Timber Design Values, Adjustment Factors, and Beam Design and will provide the student with the tools necessary to evaluate structural glued laminated timber columns and beam-columns. In addition, the analysis of glulam tension members and members subject to combined bending and tension loads will be addressed.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The effect of column slenderness on its capacity and failure mode
  • The maximum permitted slenderness ratio for timber columns
  • Calculate the critical buckling design value for a glulam column
  • Calculate the column stability factor for a glulam column
  • Calculate the capacity of a centrically loaded glulam column
  • Reasons for designing columns for eccentric loads
  • Evaluate glulam beam-columns for structural adequacy
  • Analyze glulam tension members
  • Analyze glulam members subject to combined bending and tension

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 15 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
