This course is part of a multi-part course series about one of the main areas of power engineering: power system protection and control. Power system protection and control ensures the reliable continuous operation of power systems and is therefore an essential area of power engineering. In this course, you will learn about the different protective elements used for the protection of substation buses.

We will begin the course by giving a brief review of the different types of substation bus arrangements typically found in power systems, so that we can understand why and how to protect them from faults and abnormal operating conditions. We will then discuss, in a great amount of detail, all the protective elements used in industry for the protection of substation buses. These include current differential (87) and high-impedance voltage differential (87V). We will end the course by explaining how an SEL-487B protective relay can be used for the protection of a substation bus.

By understanding how substation buses operate and how to implement different protective elements for their protection, you will be able to design robust protection schemes to protect these components from faults and abnormal operating conditions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • How to protect substation buses
  • How to implement current differential (87) protection schemes
  • How to implement high-impedance voltage differential (87V) schemes
  • How to read substation one-line and three-line drawings for bus differential protection
  • How to develop settings for SEL-487B protective relays

Video on Demand

This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 15 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
