HVAC systems account for a major portion of a building’s annual energy consumption and often require substantial space allocations. The layout and spatial layout of an air distribution system is very important to avoid physical interferences between other services such as fire protection, electrical and communication conduits, and lighting systems. Adequate access space must be provided for installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.

Like equipment costs, saving floor space is also a high priority. This is particularly true for high-value properties such as Class A office spaces, where every square foot is looked upon as revenue-generating space. In these cases, owners want to keep mechanical rooms as small as possible, which often impacts pump selection.

We all know that HVAC designers can come under increasing pressure to reduce the spatial requirements for building-services, and many times they attempt unusual strategies during the design phase, ignoring standard practices and fundamental rules. As a result, they sometimes end up with the wrong equipment selection or make incorrect design choices. Most contractors later face the battle of installing the equipment in cramped spaces, and facility personnel struggle to maintain the facility due to space constraints.

This course focuses on the allocation of space for air handling units, ductwork, piping systems, and associated components. It provides guidance on the safe movement of maintenance staff, access and egress routes, and the handling of major equipment in terms of space provision and loading capacity.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Selection, layout and space planning for air distribution components
  • Air handling unit (AHU) types, components and room sizing considerations
  • Where to locate AHU rooms and how to configure them
  • AHU sizing calculations
  • Open vs closed loop chilled water systems
  • HVAC pump types and selection criteria
  • Pump layout and space provisions
  • Hydronic piping system materials and components
  • Space provisions for vertical shafts containing HVAC duct and piping
  • Rules of thumb for designing HVAC piping systems
  • The most common supply duct systems for air conditioning
  • The basic rules of ductwork
  • Duct pressure classes and air leakage
  • Which is the best geometric shape for ductwork?
  • Fire damper types and selection process
  • How a VAV system works

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 30 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
