Introduction to Hydroelectric Power Plants (Video On Demand)
Credit: 3 PDH
Subject Matter Expert: Jonathan Russell, BEng (Hons)
In Introduction to Hydroelectric Power Plants, you'll learn ...
- What role hydroelectricity plays in today's power engineering market
- Common hydropower plant components
- Types of hydropower plants and how they operate
- The differences between hydro turbines and their typical applications (Kaplan, Pelton, Francis)
Overview
Humans have been harnessing the power of water for thousands of years. The potential energy of water has been used to drive mills, pumps, and for numerous other applications. Converting the potential and kinetic energy of water to electrical energy however, is a relatively new concept. Modern hydroelectric power plants represent the pinnacle of hydropower engineering, but how do they work? How efficient are they? Are they really 'green'? In this course, we are going to answer all these questions and many more!
The course is designed to take you from zero to hero concerning hydroelectric power plant engineering knowledge. Even if you already have some background power plant engineering knowledge, this course will serve as an efficient refresher. Whatever your level of understanding, or engineering background, you probably have never taken an engineering course like this one.
The course is packed with images, 2D animations, 3D animations, and high-quality narrated and written content.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- The function of a hydroelectric runner
- Hydropower plant terminology (headwater, tailrace, etc.)
- How different hydropower plants work (dam, run of the river, tidal, pumped storage etc.)
- The differences between Kaplan, Pelton and Francis turbines, as well as which is suitable for particular applications
- What is a fish ladder used for
Video on Demand
This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 16 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
