This course is the second in a two-part series covering HVDC Technology. The main objective of this second part is to thoroughly present the effects of harmonics in AC power systems, harmonic filter design, DC harmonic concepts and calculations, HVDC power and frequency control schemes. Since this course is a continuation of the first course from this series, it is highly recommended that you complete Part 1, which covers HVDC concepts, available arrangements, operation and control issues.

This course is intended for electrical engineers with a desire to understand basic HVDC technology design and operation principles. Presented details cover issues related to HVDC configurations, HVDC substation design arrangements and equipment, converter operation and control, effects of harmonics in power systems, filter design and HVDC power and frequency control schemes.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Effects of harmonics in AC power systems
  • DC harmonics
  • Harmonic filter design and configurations
  • HVDC schemes power and frequency control
