This 4-hour course is the first in a series of courses on the design of medium voltage electrical transmission lines. This first course addresses the factors to consider when locating a transmission line, including the preparation of plan and profile drawings and the evaluation of transmission loading.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the process of transmission line siting.
  • Identify the permits, easements, licenses, franchises, and authorizations commonly required for transmission lines.
  • Develop and use plan and profile drawings.
  • Create a sag template.
  • Explain the loading issues related to transmission lines.
  • Identify the NESC loading zones.
  • Describe extreme ice and wind loads.
  • Apply the applicable strength factors for line design.
  • Explain the factors related to distribution underbuild.
  • Describe how underbuild influences maximum spans.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
