Estimating Stormwater Runoff (Ohio Timed & Monitored)
Credit: 2 PDH
Subject Matter Expert: Robert Duane Nickols, P.E., RLS
In Estimating Stormwater Runoff , you'll learn ...
- How to use three different methods to determine peak stormwater discharge
- How to use an I-D-F chart
- How to determine the time of concentration from
- How to determine the CN number based on soil type, cover and land use
Overview
To meet the Ohio Board's intent that online courses be "paced" by the provider, a timer will be used to record your study time. You will be unable to access the quiz until the required study time of 100 minutes has been met.

This course is for Civil engineers, who might be interested or involved in stormwater runoff. One of the initial requirements in the design of culvert, channels, detention ponds, outlet structures and storm sewers is an estimate of the peak stormwater runoff. This course covers three methods of an estimate of peak stormwater runoff. The uses of some computer programs are mentioned.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply three different methods to determine peak stormwater discharge.
- Interpret an intensity-duration-frequency (I-D-F) chart.
- Determine the time of concentration for a drainage area.
- Identify the CN value based on soil type, cover, and land use.
- Calculate the CN value for other antecedent moisture conditions.
- Determine the runoff coefficient C for the rational method based on soil type, cover, and land use.
- Calculate a composite runoff coefficient C.
- Compute peak discharge for different storm frequencies using the rational method.
- Select the rainfall distribution type based on the site location.
- Obtain rainfall amounts from Atlas 14.
- Calculate the runoff depth and peak discharge using the NRCS method.
- Verify the calculated runoff depth using a chart.
- Adjust runoff calculations for pond and swamp areas.
- Calculate urban and rural peak discharge for different storm frequencies using the USGS regression equations.
- Describe the functions of the NFF program.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
