Overview

In Substations - Volume X: Grounding, you'll learn ...

  • Safe grounding practices and design for outdoor 60 Hz AC substations
  • The graphical method for determining the percentage of the total fault current that flows into the earth
  • Ground conductor sizing methodology
  • What are tolerable touch and step voltages and how to calculate them
  • Why the prevailing practice for a substation grounding system is buried horizontal conductors in the form of a grid, supplemented by vertical ground rods connected to the grid

This 4-hour course is the tenth in a series of courses on the design of electrical substations. The courses do not necessarily have to be taken in order and, for the most part, are stand-alone courses.

This course covers the design of the ground grid and discusses methods to protect the ground grid from corrosion.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The issues affecting substation grounding
  • How to make soil resistivity measurements
  • Touch and step potentials
  • The limits of acceptable body currents
  • How to design a substation grounding system
  • How to calculate mesh voltages
  • The impacts of corrosion on grounding systems
  • How to make measurements of potential corrosive currents
  • The DC potentials of various metals

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
