Traffic circles have been used in the U.S. since 1905. The modern roundabout, developed in the United Kingdom, was developed to rectify problems associated with traffic circles.

This course will provide information that will guide the engineer in planning, designing and constructing several types of roundabouts. This 8 hour course also addresses the safety and operational characteristics of roundabouts and gives crash statistics that will educate the reader on the positive effects of utilizing roundabouts.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the history and function of roundabouts.
  • Describe design speeds for roundabouts.
  • Compare roundabouts with signalized intersections.
  • Explain the benefit-cost ratio of roundabouts.
  • Describe the safety characteristics of roundabouts.
  • Identify different types of roundabouts and their applications.
  • Calculate density and capacity for a roundabout.
  • Determine the level of service for a roundabout.
  • Forecast traffic for a roundabout.
  • Explain the environmental benefits of using roundabouts.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 40 questions. PDH credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
