The Strategic Highway Research Program developed a Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program to provide a consistent, uniform basis for collecting distress data for pavement performance. This course provides guidance to improve communications within the pavement community by fostering more uniform and consistent definitions of pavement distress. Highway agencies, airports, parking facilities, transportation engineers, and others with significant investment in pavements will benefit from adopting a standard distress language. It also serves as a valuable training tool for highway agencies.
The course focuses on three particular types of pavements: (1) asphalt concrete-surface, (2) jointed Portland cement concrete, and (3) continuously reinforced Portland cement concrete. Various distress conditions are described and illustrated using diagrams and pictures. Methods of detection and measurements are defined. Detailed guidance is provided to the student on how to conduct a distress survey and how to identify severity levels for various distressed pavement conditions.
