Any structure placed in an environment where the presence of ice is a hazard to its integrity and stability needs to be designed to withstand the forces generated by ice moving against it. A designer should also consider how the cold might affect the intended operations of a structure because freezing of ice may hinder some of the normal warm weather operations.

This course explains how to estimate ice forces on the basis of ice mechanics for its failure in various modes, as well as on empirical values of effective pressure measured on full-scale structures. The guidelines presented in this course are intended for structures placed in inland waters, e.g., lakes, rivers, and coastal waters.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Mechanical properties of ice
  • Environmental forces on structures, including wind and water drag forces and thermal ice forces
  • Forces limited by ice failure, including crushing failure, ductile deformation, brittle crushing, bending failure, buckling failure and floe splitting
  • Forces limited by the momentum of an ice feature
  • Vertical ice forces on structures
