Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Power Plant
In Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Power Plant, you'll learn ...
- Understand the coal industry in the United States
- Know how gasification works
- Understand the different types of gasification processes
- Understand the components of a combined cycle plant
Overview
This four-hour course looks at a new coal-fired power plant technology called an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant. An IGCC power plant converts coal into a synthetic gas which, after suitable cleaning and treatment is burned in a combustion turbine to produce power. Furthermore, the waste heat from the combustion turbine exhaust is then used to convert water into steam and the steam is used to drive a steam turbine to produce even more electrical power.
Gasification technology has been used for years in the chemical industry and a combined cycle power plant is also existing technology, but the marriage of the two technologies is an attempt to develop a new level of efficiency in coal-fired power plants. An additional benefit is that carbon dioxide can be readily captured in an IGCC plant.
