Carl B. Dietrich, Jr., P.E., PhD.

Carl B. Dietrich, Jr., P.E., PhD, is a research faculty member in the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech and has also worked at Bell Northern Research and the Defense Information Systems Agency. He has been principal investigator, co-investigator, or senior personnel on over 20 projects, has performed and directed research in the areas of cognitive radio, software defined radio (SDR), multi-antenna systems, and radio wave propagation, and has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers.  

Dr. Dietrich has taught semester courses in software defined radio, communications systems, electronics, and electromagnetic fields.  He teaches short courses on software defined radio, covering fundamental concepts and enabling technologies in addition to the use of open source software such as GNU Radio and REDHAWK to develop and run SDR applications.  

A licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia, he earned a BS EE degree from Texas A&M University, and MS EE and PhD EE degrees from Virginia Tech. He has served as chair of the Wireless Innovation Forum’s Educational Special Interest Group, is a Senior Member of IEEE, a member of ASEE and Eta Kappa Nu, and an Extra class amateur radio operator.
