Continuing education is known as Professional Development Hours (PDH) in New York

Here is a summary of the PE continuing education requirements mandated by the New York Board of Professional Engineering and Land Surveying.

Board Approval

New York pre-approves providers/sponsors of continuing education courses and educational activities, but not specific courses or activities. A course or educational activity must be presented by a board-approved provider/sponsor in order for the activity to be accepted. PDHengineer is Board-approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED Approved Sponsor #25) to provide continuing education for engineers through October 31, 2025 and can be found in the list of approved sponsors under the name of its parent company, “Decatur Professional Development, LLC.”

The catalog on this website lists courses and webinars by Topic Areas. Due to Board restrictions on content, you should avoid earning your PDH in the Topic Areas listed above.

Not all courses and educational activities offered by an approved sponsor are acceptable for continuing education credit in New York State. Courses and educational activities must contribute to the professional practice of professional engineering. The subject matter of the course or educational activity must be related to professional practice and contribute to the development or maintenance of professional knowledge.

Acceptable subjects may include: aerospace engineering, agricultural engineering, architecture, bioengineering, ceramic engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, construction engineering, control systems engineering, electrical/computer engineering, environmental engineering, fire protection engineering, geological engineering, industrial engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, materials/metallurgical engineering, mining/mineral engineering, naval architecture/marine engineering, nuclear/radiological engineering, ocean engineering, petroleum engineering, structural engineering, systems engineering, architecture, land surveying; or other matters of law and/or ethics which contribute to the professional practice in engineering and the health, safety, and/or welfare of the public; and other topics which contribute to the professional practice of engineering.

Non-acceptable subjects: subject areas that are not related to professional practice and the development or maintenance of professional knowledge, such as project management related to improving/maximizing profitability and professional fees; marketing and public relations; expanding a design professional’s business; laws related to arbitration, mediation, liens and limiting the design professional’s liability (unless they are related to safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of the public); real estate licensing; basic Auto CAD; personal, estate or financial planning; zoning as it relates to increasing a developer or engineer/land surveyor’s profitability; design build and/or alternative delivery methods (unless it includes information on the laws related to design build and its limitations in New York State).

Due to the limited course areas accepted by New York, some PDHengineer.com courses that are accepted by other states are not accepted by the New York State Board. Please check the Board Acceptance tab on the Course Overview pages to verify New York Board acceptance.

One PDH covering the topic of professional ethics must be included in each renewal cycle.

Approved Activities

Effective January 2022, there is no longer a mandated number of “live” courses. Engineers may freely select between live seminars or webinars and online courses, all of which must be provided by a board-approved sponsor. (View board’s announcement of this change.)

PDH Carryover

Effective January 2022, up to 6 PDH can be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Notes

  1. Engineers must maintain a record of continuing education activities for a minimum of six years. Information must include: the type of learning activity, the course title, subject of the continuing education program, the number of hours completed, the sponsor name and registration number, attendance verification (live events) or proof of completion (other activities including online courses), date, and location (live event). PDHengineer helps you to meet this requirement by providing immediate access to download and print a certificate upon successful completion of a course or webinar. Additionally, your certificates of completion are securely maintained by PDHengineer for a minimum of ten years and can be accessed online at any time through your login account.
  2. Special rules apply to engineers who have had a lapse in practice or have not been licensed in New York for the entire three-year period.
