Course Fee: $199.99 - a savings of up to 40%

Overview

This package has been specially designed by PDHengineer.com to provide up to 11 PDH at a discount of 40% or more. Plus, these credits are guaranteed to be accepted by your state board.

This course consists of two of our most popular Transportation Engineering courses in one easy-to-complete package that will earn 10 PDH. You may also take our FREE ethics course, Professional Ethics for Engineers, for a total of 11 PDH at the discounted price of $199.99.

Section 1 - Traffic Signal Confirguration

This course will discuss the traffic signal configuration to determine the proper phasing and signal layout to be installed at an intersection that conforms to the latest 2003 Edition to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (USDOT MUTCD). To properly design a traffic signal at an intersection, the Engineer must understand all the rules and standards that govern the installation by learning the meanings of each signal indication and what can be legally installed and what is an illegal installation.

Students of this course will be able to master the operations, the purpose of the traffic signal indication, and the relationship of the signal heads with the approaching traffic. These relationships, if not properly mastered, can cause vehicle and pedestrian accidents within the intersection involving years of litigation.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to determine:

  • The regulations governing the installation of a traffic signal
  • The meaning of each signal indication and its usage
  • Left and Right Turn Signal configuration alternatives
  • Prohibited Signal Indications
  • Flashing signal indications
  • The placement of the signal faces with the intersection
  • Arrangement of the signal indications per approach
  • The signal configuration alternatives

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The 2003 edition of the MUTCD
  • Traffic control signal definitions
  • Application of steady signal indications
  • Application of steady signal indications for left turns
  • Application of steady signal indications for right turns
  • Prohibited steady signal indications
  • Application of flashing signal indications
  • Size, number and location of signal face by approach
  • Number and arrangement of signal sections in vehicle signal faces
  • Visibility, shielding, and positioning of signal faces

Section 2 - Vehicle Detectors

This course will discuss the different types of vehicle detectors used in the design of a signalized intersection in order to control traffic.

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to determine the type, function, size, and placement of vehicle detectors to obtain the desired operations to move traffic through an intersection efficiently. Participants will also better understand the design standards and requirements of different States and/or local governing agencies having jurisdiction.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Types of vehicle detections
  • Vehicle detection design and operations
  • Loop detection installation
  • Calling detection
  • Presence detection
  • Detector loop wire
  • Curb and shoulder installation
  • Time delay detectors
