Mechanical
Design of Pumping Stations - Miscellaneous Equipment
Edward Brunet, Jr., P.E.
Overview
This course covers Chapter 9 and Appendices C and D in the US Army Corps
of Engineers document EM 1110-2-3105, "Mechanical and Electrical Design of
Pumping Stations". These chapters cover the design of miscellaneous
mechanical equipment for pumping stations, including sump closures, trashracks,
overhead cranes, ventilation, pump bearings, sump pumps and equipment
protection.
This course is relevant to engineers responsible for
designing flood control pumping stations. The coverage of some subjects,
such as pump bearings, overhead cranes and equipment protection provide good
engineering practice that used for other applications. However, the
majority of the course covers sump closures and trash racks, which do not have
many applications outside of flood control pumping stations.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of
ten questions at the end of
this course to obtain PDH credits.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Attained
This course teaches the following specific knowledge and
skills:
-
Relative merits of different types of sump closures
including stop logs, slide gates and roller gates.
-
Different types of trashracks available and their
relative merits
-

capacities.
-
Pumping station ventilation requirements
-
Sump pump sizing and selection
-
Methods for protecting equipment from deterioration and
moisture
-
Pump bearing seal systems
-
