High Temperature Water Heating Systems
Steven G. Liescheidt, P.E., CSI-CCS, CCPR.
Overview
High temperature heating water systems have
numerous advantages over steam heat distribution systems. The inherent losses of
a steam system mean that significant fuel savings in a high temperature heating
water system may be achieved relative to an equivalent capacity steam system.
As energy rates continue to climb, alternate types of central plant heating
concepts should be considered. High temperature heating water systems do offer
advantages, yet there are different and possibly greater safety issues to deal
with when higher temperatures and pressures are used. An evaluation of the
benefits of using high temperature water systems begins with reviewing how they
are sized and how they function.
In this course the student will be provided
guidance for the design of high temperature water heating systems classified as
operating with supply water temperature above 240 degrees F. and designed to a
pressure rating of 300 psi. This course presents the unique features of high
temperature systems, factors for comparison with other heat distribution
mediums, and criteria to design or modify high temperature heating water
systems.
The student is expected to read and review the material contained
in the High Temperature Water Heating Systems, Army TM 5-810; Air Force Joint
Manual 32-1057 (Formerly AFR 88-28), 31 December 1991
The
student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.
