Overview

Corrosion is defined as the deterioration of a material, usually a metal, because of a reaction with its environment and which requires the presence of an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte, and an electrical current.  The annual cost of corrosion and corrosion protection in the U.S. is estimated to be in the billions of dollars.  Corrosion can be mitigated by five basic methods:  coatings, cathodic protection, materials selection, chemical inhibitors, and environmental change. It is important that the engineer understands the causes and forms of corrosion, as well as the available protections, to ensure that the most cost effective corrosion mitigation method is employed for each application.

In this course, the student will study the causes and forms of corrosion and the methods available for providing corrosion protection.  The course will cover Chapter 2, "Corrosion Theory and Protection" in the US Army Corps of Engineers document EM 1110-2-3400, "Painting: New Construction and Maintenance".

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of ten questions at the end of this course to obtain PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Attained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Causes of corrosion.

  • The galvanic series in seawater.

  • Forms of corrosion, including galvanic, concentration-cell, pitting, intergranular, stress corrosion, dealloying, and erosion corrosion.

  • Corrosion mitigation methods, including design practices, sacrificial anode systems, impressed current systems, corrosion inhibitors, and protective coatings.
