Selecting an Energy-Efficient Motor
Rebecca Johnson, P.E.
Overview
Over half of all electrical energy consumed in the U.S. is
used by electric motors. Energy savings amounting to many times the
initial cost of a motor can be realized by selecting an energy-efficient motor
for a new application. Substantial savings can also be realized by
replacing older, inefficient motors with new energy-efficient models.
However, selection of an energy-efficient motor is not always cost effective.
Many factors influence the overall cost of a motor including initial capital
cost, efficiency rating, annual hours of use, energy rates, installation and
downtime costs and the availability of utility rebates.
In this course, the student will review the document
"Buying an Energy-Efficient Motor" published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy .
This publication outlines the factors to consider when determining whether
selection of an energy-efficient motor is cost effective.
This course is relevant to engineers and other personnel responsible for
selecting, purchasing and maintaining electric motors.
The student must take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of
ten questions at the end of
this course to obtain PDH credits.
