Segmental Retaining Wall Design

Course No. C-5013

Back to Civil Courses

Credit: 5 PDH
Course Fee: $139.95

Richard Edmonds, P.E.

Overview

Segmented retaining walls are becoming an increasingly popular option where retaining walls are needed. Architects and developers like them because of their aesthetic value compared to a masonry block wall or plain concrete surface. Contractors like them because in many cases they are faster and easier to install than reinforced masonry or reinforced concrete walls.

The course gives a brief description of segmented retaining walls and considers some of their advantages and disadvantages. The main purpose of this course is to explain a step by step approach on how a segmented retaining wall is designed by looking at the possible modes of failure and how each one is checked and analyzed.

To receive PDH credit, the student must take a multiple choice quiz of thirty (30) questions.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Advantages and disadvantages to using segmented retaining walls
  • Understanding the differences between gravity and reinforced segmented retaining walls
  • Typical modes of failure that each type of wall can experience
  • Typical factors of safety to use in design of segmented retaining walls
  • Basic design steps for both gravity and reinforced segmented retaining walls
  • Measures to be taken if factors of safety are below the required minimum value
