Sanitary and Industrial Wastewater Collection -
Gravity Systems
Vincent Reynolds, P.E.
Overview
Wastewater is a part of everyday life. Every
living creature and every industry on earth creates waste in some form or
another. Wastewater acts as a medium to direct waste to various treatment plants
by means of sanitary sewer lines. Some sewer lines use a combination of
gravity flow and flow induced by pumping systems. This 4 PDH course is Part I of
a two-part series. This course will focus on the sanitary sewer lines that are
under gravity flow. Part II focuses on sewer lines where wastewater flow is
facilitated by the use of pumps.
This course will provide information that will
guide the engineer in planning, designing and constructing sanitary sewer
systems. The course
materials are based solely on the materials “Sanitary and Industrial Wastewater
Collection (Gravity Systems)" as published by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The student will learn how to determine the pipe size and flow of sanitary sewer
systems. Several calculations and nomographs are presented that will be used to
design such systems. The
course will also discuss the safety and operational characteristics of gravity
sewer systems.
The student must take a
multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.
