Monitoring Groundwater Conditions
Randy Down, P.E.
Overview
This
course addresses the many applications and techniques for sampling and analyzing
groundwater. Regulatory requirements stipulate the minimum water quality
of groundwater sources. Monitoring wells are used to obtain samples of
subsurface groundwater for analysis. But, how do you construct a
monitoring well? And what types of measurements should be taken to ensure
regulatory compliance?
In
this course, you will learn about how groundwater is naturally contained within
rock formations underground. You will learn about the different
construction methods used for monitoring wells. Groundwater constituents,
which are dissolved minerals in water, will be covered, as well as methods for
measuring for each constituent. You will learn the different methods
available for measuring groundwater level. The pros and cons of automated
monitoring systems will be discussed relative to manual monitoring techniques.
Finally, the type of data loggers commercially available will be discussed.
The student must take a
multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions at the end of
this course to obtain PDH credits.
