Beam-Bearing
Plates and Column Base Plates by ASD / LRFD Steel Construction Manual
Robert
Duane Nickols, PE
Overview
This course covers the design of column base plates and beam bearing plates based on the AISC Steel Construction Manual, 13th edition. No prior knowledge of previous codes is necessary.
This course should be of particular interest to Civil and Structural Engineers. The course will show how to design a column base plate based on its strength limit state found in section J8 of the specification. It will show how to design a beam bearing plate based on three limits states. One is found in section J8 and two are in section J10 of the specification. The two in section J10 are for web local yielding and web crippling of the beam. The course will also show how Excel could be used to design beam bearing plates.
The student must take
a quiz consisting of ten (10) questions in order to receive PDH credit.
Specific Knowledge or Skill Attained
This
course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Thickness increments for column base plates and beam bearing plates
- Base plate dimensions are usually rounded to even inches while bearing plates are usually rounded to the nearest inch
- Base plates and bearing plates are usually made from A36 steel
- The three cases of base plate design in AISC, Design Guide, 2nd edition
- How to calculate the size of a column base plate based on LRFD and ASD
- How to calculate the thickness of a column base plate based on LRFD and ASD
- How to calculate the size of a beam bearing plate based on LRFD and ASD
- How to calculate the thickness of a beam bearing plate based on LRFD and ASD
- How to calculate the thickness of the wall if no beam bearing plate is required based on LRFD and ASD
- How Excel might be used to design beam bearing plates
