Course No. C-12001

Back to Environmental Courses

Credit:  12 PDH
Course Fee:  $299.95

Edward Brunet, Jr., P.E.

Overview

In this course the student will review EM 1110-2-501, "Design, Construction and Operation of Small Wastewater Systems" published by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  This course is particularly relevant to engineers involved in the design, construction and operation of small wastewater systems, as well as engineers interested in gaining a fundamental understanding of the design of small wastewater systems.

The material covered in the referenced document is quite comprehensive.  Typical wastewater rates and characteristics are discussed for various types of fixtures and facilities.  Treatment options and their respective design considerations are presented ranging from small individual units, such as composting toilets and septic tanks, to complete small-scale treatment systems incorporating preliminary, primary and secondary treatment methods.  Design of wastewater collection systems is also addressed, as well as regulatory requirements for the disposal of sludge.

The student must take a multiple-choice quiz at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Attained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Wastewater generation rates and characterization for various types of recreational facilities.

  • Collection systems for wastewater, including truck transport, gravity flow piping systems and force main systems

  • Small individual wastewater treatment units, including composting toilets, vault toilets and septic tanks.

  • Design of conventional multi-stage wastewater treatment facilities, including preliminary, primary and secondary treatment methods

  • Aerobic, anaerobic and facultative stabilization ponds

  • Natural systems for wastewater treatment, including both soil-based and aquatic methods

  • The use of wetlands for wastewater treatment

  • Nutrient removal requirements and methods

  • Sludge treatment and disposal regulations

  • Disinfection methods for wastewater effluents

  • Wastewater treatment process selection
