Design and Selection of Small
Wastewater Systems
Edward Brunet, Jr., P.E.
Overview
In this course the student
will review EM 1110-2-501, "Design, Construction and Operation of Small
Wastewater Systems" published by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This
course is particularly relevant to engineers involved in the design,
construction and operation of small wastewater systems, as well as engineers
interested in gaining a fundamental understanding of the design of small
wastewater systems.
The material covered in the
referenced document is quite comprehensive. Typical wastewater rates and
characteristics are discussed for various types of fixtures and facilities.
Treatment options and their respective design considerations are presented
ranging from small individual units, such as composting toilets and septic
tanks, to complete small-scale treatment systems incorporating preliminary,
primary and secondary treatment methods. Design of wastewater collection
systems is also addressed, as well as regulatory requirements for the disposal
of sludge.
The student must take a
multiple-choice quiz at the end of this course to earn PDH credits.
